CHAPTER NINE

Mel was also waiting for Carmen and Fabiola to return. She had help from the blacksmith to tighten the shoes on her horses, watching and learning how they did some of the blacksmithing. She checked on the large flock of sheep that a couple men were taking out on the hills surrounding the home paddock, so the grass nearby wouldn’t wear down from overeating.

She packed, and repacked the supplies she had in the house, checking against future need. She had given a list for the carters to take back to Sydney to order her own supplies. She included a letter, which instructed her bank to draw from her account to pay for the supplies. She also wrote to her solicitor explaining where she was and instructing him to check up on the dressmaker’s shop for her. Another letter went to her accountant making the same request. A third letter went directly to the shop, asking Mrs. Waters how she was doing after all these months. She knew it might be a year before she heard from any or all of them. Meanwhile, she was making plans.

Carmen and Fabiola returned, and the supplies on the packhorses were gone. Another of the men left the next day to finish the rounds on the other side of the station as they had only gone through half of the flocks surrounding their station. They were spread out, but not nearly as large as they were before the losses Twin Station had suffered.

The four of them ate dinner together, discussing where Mel should head out and establish her own station. While Fabiola would have liked Mel to the south where there weren’t any of their own flocks since the fire, Mel was drawn north based on conversations with the stockmen they had visited as well as those working at the home paddock.

“I wish to find my own place,” Mel asserted, and Carmen understood her desire, but Fabiola and her brother both tried to convince her that the southern paddocks were empty of sheep and would be to her benefit. “There’s more people there too,” she pointed out. “I appreciate what you are saying,” Mel addressed Fabiola and ignored Harold since he didn’t contribute much of value to the conversation. He mostly sat gazing at Carmen, who also ignored him as she joined in the conversation.

“You wouldn’t be like a tenant farmer,” Carmen pointed out. “If you go north, you will totally be on your own if something happens. How are you going to deal with Alinta’s pregnancy?” she asked.

“I guess we will be going slower than I thought,” she admitted. “It will give me a chance to scope out the land and choose where I’ll set up my station.”

“As far as I know, there are no stations north of here,” Fabiola conceded since the Yank was so determined to go. “East of here there are a few, as I’m sure you saw on the tracks, but nothing like on the other side of the Cobdogla.
